Poole: The Sun-Chasing Family Garden

The brief for this project was to transform an existing family garden into a welcoming, versatile outdoor space that makes the most of the available sunlight throughout the day. The design needed to balance areas for relaxation, dining, and family life, while creating a cohesive, contemporary garden with the warmth and character of Mediterranean-inspired landscaping.

Central to the transformation is an expanded patio, thoughtfully positioned to capture the daytime sun and provide a generous space for relaxing and entertaining. An aluminium pergola introduces a dedicated outdoor dining area, offering welcome shade during warmer days and a comfortable setting for enjoying the garden into the evening.

The garden’s different levels and zones are brought together through a series of carefully considered structural elements. Extra-wide steps create an inviting central transition, encouraging a natural flow between the spaces while adding a strong architectural feature to the overall design.

Planting plays an important role in softening the hard landscaping and creating visual interest throughout the garden. A ground-level planting pocket introduces greenery at the heart of the layout, breaking up the paved surfaces, while raised wall planting helps to define and visually separate the different zones without compromising the garden’s open, connected feel.

A cohesive Mediterranean-inspired material palette brings warmth, texture, and understated elegance to the design. The combination of complementary surfaces, architectural detailing, and carefully positioned planting creates a harmonious outdoor environment that feels both structured and inviting.

The result is a beautifully balanced family garden that embraces the changing light throughout the day, offering distinct yet connected spaces for everything from sunny afternoons to relaxed evening dining.
